What We Do

Custom Cushions, Upholstery & Recoveries

Learn about all the types of products we make, how we make them and also all the different options we have available for you to customise your cushions with, such as wadding, piping and buttons!

Cushions and Covers Made in the UK

Most other companies import their products from outside of the UK, which is the reason they cannot make custom sizes and only offer a few colour options.

Most are imported from China and are poorly made. Our cushions are manufactured right here in the UK, with much higher quality filling and materials.

We stand by our products as being the best on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between polyester wadding and foam?

Polyester wadding and foam serve different purposes in cushion construction – they're complementary, not alternatives:

Foam = Core support

What it is:

  • Solid foam block (Firm, Medium Firm, or Reflex)
  • The main cushion structure
  • Provides support and shape
  • Cut to exact cushion dimensions

Purpose:

  • Primary seating support
  • Determines cushion firmness
  • Creates cushion height/thickness
  • Bears weight and provides comfort

Foam types we offer:

  • Firm foam – Maximum support
  • Medium Firm foam – Balanced comfort
  • Reflex foam – Orthopedic, pressure-relieving

Used for:

  • All seating cushions (window seats, benches, sofas)
  • Cushion inners and inserts
  • Structural core of every cushion

Polyester wadding = Soft outer layer

What it is:

  • Soft, fluffy fibrous batting
  • Wraps around foam core
  • Thin layer (typically 1/2" - 1")
  • Like a soft cloud around the foam

Purpose:

  • Softens cushion feel
  • Creates rounded, plump edges
  • Adds professional upholstered look
  • Buffer between foam and fabric
  • Prevents foam shifting in cover

NOT for primary support:

  • Cannot replace foam
  • Provides comfort, not structure
  • Decorative and finishing element

Used for:

  • Optional upgrade on any cushion
  • Professional upholstery finish
  • Softer seating feel

How they work together:

Standard cushion (foam only):

  • Foam core cut to size
  • Wrapped in stockinette (free, included)
  • Inserted into upholstery fabric cover
  • Firm edges, structured feel

Enhanced cushion (foam + wadding):

  • Foam core cut to size
  • Wrapped in stockinette (free)
  • Polyester wadding wrapped around foam
  • Inserted into fabric cover
  • Softer edges, plumper appearance, luxe feel

Visual difference:

Without wadding:

  • Firm, defined edges
  • Cushion outline shows foam shape exactly
  • More structured, tailored look
  • Slight gap between foam and fabric

With wadding:

  • Soft, rounded edges
  • Plump, filled-out appearance
  • Luxurious, professional look
  • Fabric fits smoothly, no gaps

When to add polyester wadding:

✅ ADD WADDING if you want:

  • Softer feel (foam still provides support, wadding adds comfort layer)
  • Fuller, plumper appearance
  • Professional upholstered look
  • Rounded edges instead of sharp corners
  • Classic, traditional cushion aesthetic
  • Protection between foam and delicate fabrics

✅ Especially recommended for:

  • Made to measure window seat cushions (luxe appearance)
  • Bespoke bench cushions (professional finish)
  • Replacement sofa cushions (match original upholstered look)
  • Custom cushions with firm foam (softens the feel)
  • High-end, designer projects

❌ SKIP WADDING if you prefer:

  • Firm, structured feel
  • Clean, modern aesthetic with defined edges
  • Budget-conscious (wadding is optional extra)
  • Very thick cushions (6+ inches already substantial)
  • Outdoor cushions (wadding can retain moisture)

Common combinations:

Firm foam + wadding:

  • Supportive core, soft surface
  • Best of both: structure AND comfort
  • Popular for window seat cushions
  • Professional upholstered feel

Medium Firm foam + wadding:

  • Balanced support with extra softness
  • Luxurious comfort
  • Great for sofa cushions
  • Well-rounded performance

Reflex foam + wadding:

  • Ultimate comfort combination
  • Premium cushion experience
  • Plush, high-end feel
  • Armchair cushions, reading nooks

Firm foam without wadding:

  • Maximum support, structured feel
  • Best for dining benches (prevents slouching)
  • Commercial seating
  • Budget option (still excellent quality)

Pricing:

  • Foam: Included in cushion price (choose type)
  • Stockinette wrap: FREE (always included around foam)
  • Polyester wadding: Optional extra (small additional cost)

Wadding cost depends on cushion size and will be itemized in your free quote.

Can't decide?

Our recommendation:

For most custom seating cushions (window seats, benches, sofas), adding polyester wadding is worthwhile:

  • Small extra cost
  • Significant comfort and aesthetic improvement
  • Professional, upholstered finish
  • Makes cushions look and feel more expensive

Talk to our experts:

We can advise whether wadding suits your:

  • Cushion type (bench, window seat, sofa)
  • Foam choice (Firm, Medium Firm, Reflex)
  • Style preference (modern vs. traditional)
  • Budget

To summarize:

Foam = Essential core structure and support
Wadding = Optional comfort and finishing layer

Both together = Professional, luxurious custom cushions

Popular for:

  • Made to measure window seat cushions with wadding
  • Bespoke bench cushions with professional finish
  • Replacement sofa cushions matching original quality
  • Custom bench seat cushions with plump appearance
  • High-quality cushion inners wrapped in wadding

Do you offer contrasting piping or trim?

Yes! Contrasting piping is a popular way to add a custom, designer touch to your cushions.

Piping options:

1. Matching piping (standard)

  • Piping made from same upholstery fabric as cushion
  • Seamless, coordinated look
  • Classic, traditional style
  • Most popular choice

2. Contrasting piping (custom)

  • Piping in different color/fabric than main cushion
  • Creates definition and visual interest
  • Designer, tailored appearance
  • Highlights cushion edges

3. No piping

  • Clean, simple edge
  • More casual look
  • Standard option (no extra cost)

Contrasting piping ideas:

Colour contrasts:

  • Dark cushion + light piping (navy cushion, white piping)
  • Light cushion + dark piping (cream cushion, charcoal piping)
  • Bold accent (grey cushion, mustard piping)
  • Subtle tone-on-tone (light grey cushion, dark grey piping)

Popular combinations:

For window seat cushions:

  • White cushions with navy piping (coastal look)
  • Grey cushions with yellow piping (modern accent)
  • Cream cushions with natural linen piping (neutral elegance)

For bench cushions:

  • Striped fabric with solid colour piping
  • Plain cushions with patterned piping
  • Matching dining chair colours with piping detail

For banquette cushions:

  • Restaurant brand colours (cushion + piping)
  • Bold contrasts for visual impact
  • Coordinate with booth upholstery

For replacement sofa cushions:

  • Match sofa base colour, contrast piping for definition
  • Update old sofa with modern colour pop
  • Tie together room colour scheme

Piping placement:

Piping can be added to:

  • Top and bottom edges (most common)
  • All seams (boxing strip edges too)
  • Selected edges only

How to choose piping color:

Match existing décor:

  • Pull accent colour from curtains, rugs, or artwork
  • Coordinate with wall colour
  • Echo other furniture details

Create cohesion:

  • Use same piping colour across multiple cushions
  • Tie together window seat cushions and bench cushions
  • Unify mismatched furniture

Add personality:

  • Unexpected colour pop
  • On-trend accent hues
  • Seasonal changes (order spare covers)

Piping fabric:

Contrasting piping can be made from:

  • Different colour, same fabric type (e.g., velvet cushion, different colour velvet piping)
  • Contrasting fabric (e.g., linen cushion, leather-look piping)
  • Your choice from our upholstery fabric range

Pricing:

Piping (matching or contrasting) is an optional extra:

  • Small additional cost
  • Depends on cushion size (more piping needed for larger cushions)
  • Contrasting piping same price as matching piping
  • Included in your free quote

Other trim options:

Beyond piping, we can also add:

  • Contrast welting – Flatter than piping
  • Fabric borders – Wider contrasting edge band
  • Decorative buttons – Tufted details

(Discuss custom trim options with our team)

Design tips:

Do:✓ Request fabric samples of both main and piping colours
✓ View samples together in your space
✓ Consider long-term: will the contrast date?
✓ Use contrasting piping to define cushion edges
✓ Coordinate piping across multiple cushions

Don't:✗ Choose contrast that's too similar (won't show up)
✗ Overthink it – piping is subtle but effective
✗ Mix too many colours (keep it cohesive)

Popular projects with contrasting piping:

  • Made to measure window seat cushions with accent piping
  • Custom bench cushions with coordinating trim
  • Bespoke sofa cushions with designer contrast detail
  • Dining bench cushions with restaurant brand colours
  • Luxury cushion inners with elegant piping finish

Not sure about piping?

Our upholstery experts can:

  • Show you examples of contrasting piping
  • Recommend colour combinations
  • Advise whether piping suits your style
  • Help you visualize the finished look

Contrasting piping transforms standard custom cushions into designer pieces with minimal extra cost.

How long do cushions typically last?

Cushion lifespan varies based on foam quality, usage, and care:

Factors affecting foam life:

REDUCES lifespan:

  • ❌ Daily heavy use in same spot
  • ❌ Multiple heavy users
  • ❌ Poor quality foam (not ours!)
  • ❌ Moisture exposure
  • ❌ Direct heat/sunlight
  • ❌ Very thin foam (less than 2 inches)
  • ❌ No wadding protection

EXTENDS lifespan:

  • ✅ Rotating and flipping cushions regularly
  • ✅ Quality foam (firm or reflex)
  • ✅ Polyester wadding added
  • ✅ Adequate thickness (3-6 inches)
  • ✅ Proper care and maintenance
  • ✅ Stockinette wrapping (included free)
  • ✅ Varied use (not always same spot)

Fabric/cover lifespan:

Generally:

  • 5-10 years depending on fabric quality and use
  • Outdoor fabrics: 3-7 years (UV exposure)
  • Wipe-clean fabrics: 5-8 years (very durable)
  • Delicate fabrics: 3-5 years

Covers often outlast foam if:

  • Zippered for easy cleaning
  • Regular maintenance
  • Quality upholstery fabric chosen
  • Protected from sun damage

By cushion type:

Window seat cushions:

  • 7-10 years (moderate use)
  • Longer if used seasonally

Bench seat cushions:

  • 5-8 years (daily dining use)
  • 8-10 years (entryway/occasional use)

Replacement sofa cushions:

  • 5-8 years (daily family use)
  • 8-10 years (formal living room)

Banquette/dining cushions:

  • 5-7 years (heavy daily use)
  • Firm foam recommended for longest life

Outdoor cushions:

  • 3-5 years (full exposure)
  • 5-7 years (covered porch/brought inside)

Signs it's time to replace:

Foam degradation:

  • ❌ Permanent sagging or indentations
  • ❌ Lumpy, uneven feel
  • ❌ No spring-back after sitting
  • ❌ Significant height loss
  • ❌ Bottoming out (feeling frame)

Cover wear:

  • ❌ Fabric tears or holes
  • ❌ Permanent stains
  • ❌ Color fading
  • ❌ Seam failures

When one, not both, is worn:

Good foam, worn covers:

  • Order replacement cushion covers only
  • More economical than full replacement
  • We can create new covers for your existing foam

Good covers, sagging foam:

  • Order replacement foam inserts
  • Keep your existing covers (if zippered)
  • Or use our £5 refitting service

Both worn:

  • Complete replacement cushions
  • Fresh start with quality materials
  • Upgrade foam or fabric choices

Maximize your cushion lifespan:

Do:✅ Rotate cushions monthly
✅ Plump daily
✅ Clean spills immediately
✅ Vacuum regularly
✅ Bring outdoor cushions inside
✅ Use adequate foam thickness
✅ Choose firm or reflex foam for durability
✅ Add polyester wadding

Don't:❌ Leave in direct sunlight
❌ Expose to moisture
❌ Sit in exact same spot daily
❌ Neglect cleaning
❌ Use worn-out cushions (damages furniture)

Replacement options:

When your cushions reach end of life, we offer:

  • Replacement foam only (keep existing covers)
  • Replacement covers only (keep existing foam)

  • Window seat cushions (tie to hooks or fixtures)
  • Garden bench cushions
  • Any cushion that needs securing

Tie options:

  • Traditional, classic look

Velcro attachments:

  • Storage bench cushions (keeps lid functional)
  • Cushions that shouldn't shift
  • Clean, invisible attachment
  • Modern, streamlined look

Velcro options:

  • Strips – Sewn to cushion bottom
  • Dots – Multiple small velcro points
  • Heavy-duty – For larger or heavier cushions

How it works:

  • Velcro sewn to bottom of cushion
  • Corresponding velcro adhered to bench/seat surface
  • Cushion stays securely in place
  • Easy to remove when needed

Advantages of velcro:

  • Invisible (no visible ties)
  • Very secure hold
  • Easy removal for cleaning
  • Modern aesthetic

Which attachment should you choose?

Choose TIES if:

  • You have a traditional or classic design
  • Your bench/chair has legs or a backrest to tie to
  • You want decorative detail
  • Outdoor cushions (ties won't fail like adhesive velcro)
  • Garden bench cushions or dining bench cushions

Choose VELCRO if:

  • You want invisible attachment
  • Modern, minimalist aesthetic
  • Storage bench cushions (so lid opens smoothly)
  • Indoor window seat cushions
  • Smooth surface to adhere velcro to

Choose NEITHER if:

  • Cushion fits snugly in space (won't slide)
  • Very heavy cushions (weight keeps them in place)
  • You prefer complete freedom to move cushions

Pricing:

Both ties and velcro are optional extras:

  • Ties: Generally lower cost
  • Velcro: Slightly higher cost (includes adhesive-back velcro for surface)

Costs will be included in your free quote.

Popular attachment projects:

  • Bench cushions with ties for dining benches

How do I measure for window seat cushions?

Getting accurate measurements is essential for perfect-fitting made to measure window seat cushions. Here's our step-by-step guide:

For straight/rectangular window seats:

  1. Width – Measure the full width of the seat from wall to wall (or end to end)
  2. Depth – Measure from the back (wall) to the front edge of the seat
  3. Note any obstacles – Radiators, window frames, or architectural features

For bay window seat cushions:

  1. Measure each section separately if creating multiple cushions
  2. For a single curved cushion, we'll need:
    • Overall width at the widest point
    • Depth at the deepest point
    • The curve radius or a template/photo

For shaped or custom window seats:

We recommend creating a template:

  • Use cardboard, paper, or old fabric to trace the exact shape
  • Bring or send the template to us
  • Or provide detailed measurements with photos

Thickness:

  • Standard window seat cushions: 3-5 inches thick
  • Thicker for extra comfort: 5-6 inches
  • Thinner for lower profiles: 2-3 inches

Tips for accurate measuring:

  • Measure in multiple places (window seats aren't always perfectly square)
  • Account for any required clearance (e.g., under window sills)
  • Consider whether you want the cushion to fit wall-to-wall or have gaps
  • Measure in centimeters or inches – whichever you're comfortable with

Not confident measuring?

Visit our warehouse with your dimensions or photos, and our experts can help. We can also advise on the best foam type (Firm, Medium Firm, or Reflex) and whether to add polyester wadding for extra comfort.

What happens next:

Once we have your measurements, we'll provide a free quote for your custom window seat cushion, including:

  • Foam cut to your exact size
  • Your choice of upholstery fabric
  • Optional extras (piping, ties, zippers)

Firm Foam

Our firmest option, ideal for:

  • High-traffic seating areas
  • Customers who prefer structured, supportive seating

Medium Firm Foam

Our most versatile option, perfect for:

Our premium orthopedic foam, designed for:

  • Maximum comfort and pressure relief

  • Customers requiring extra support
  • Long-duration seating comfort

Foam thickness:

We stock foam up to 6 inches thick. For custom requirements beyond 6 inches or special foam sizes, we can order these in specifically for your bespoke cushion project.

Included with every foam order:

All cushion foam is wrapped with free stockinette (a protective cotton layer) at no extra charge. This helps the foam slide easily into covers and provides an additional barrier between the foam and your upholstery fabric.

Scatter cushions:

We also offer scatter cushions filled with your choice of:

  • Crumb foam – Supportive and bounces back well
  • Fibre – Soft, lightweight, and easy to plump

How long is my quote valid for?

We can hold the price of your custom cushion quote for 30 days, giving you time to consider your options and make the right decision for your project—whether that's bespoke window seat cushions, made to measure bench cushions, or replacement sofa cushions.

After 30 days, pricing is subject to current market rates and supplier costs, which may change based on fabric and foam availability.

This applies to all our products, including custom foam cushions cut to size and upholstery services.

Can I use multiple discounts?

No, we do not currently offer discount stacking. Only one discount can be applied per order.

However, all our custom cushions—including made to measure window seat cushions, bespoke bench cushions, and replacement sofa cushions—are competitively priced to offer great value from the start.

What is polyester wadding and is it worth adding to my cushion?

Polyester wadding (also known as cushion wrap or batting) is a soft, fibrous layer that wraps around your cushion's foam insert. It's commonly used in upholstery to enhance both comfort and appearance.

Benefits of polyester wadding:

  • Creates a softer, more comfortable seating surface
  • Gives cushions a plumper, fuller appearance
  • Prevents foam from shifting inside the cover
  • Provides a professional, rounded edge finish
  • Acts as a protective barrier between foam and fabric

Is it worth it?

If you prefer firm, structured cushions, wadding may not be necessary. However, for a softer feel and that classic upholstered look, it's a worthwhile addition.

Not sure what's right for your project? Our upholstery experts can help you choose the best cushion filling options for your needs.

I want to refill my cushions but I'm not confident with putting the covers on myself. Can I send them to you?

Yes, absolutely! We offer a cushion refilling service where you can either send your covers to us or bring them to our warehouse in person. We charge £5 per cover to professionally fit your new cushion foam inserts into your existing covers and return them to you (or have them ready for collection) as finished, ready-to-use cushions.

This service is perfect for:

  • Replacement sofa cushions and sofa cushion foam replacement
  • Bench cushion refills and replacement bench cushions
  • Window seat cushion replacement
  • Any custom cushion inserts that need professional fitting

Our upholstery experts will ensure your cushions are properly fitted with the right density foam for optimal comfort and longevity. Whether you need replacement foam for sofa cushions, bench seat cushions, or armchair cushions, we'll handle the assembly for you.

Can I use my own fabric?

Yes, you can use your own fabric for your custom cushions! We're happy to work with your chosen material for window seat cushions, bench cushions, sofa cushion covers, or any bespoke cushion project.

We only ask that you ensure your fabric meets these requirements:

  • Suitable for upholstery use (durable enough for seating)
  • At least 135cm wide
  • Sufficient quantity for your cushion dimensions

What we can create with your fabric:

  • Made to measure window seat cushions and covers
  • Custom bench cushions and bench seat cushions
  • Replacement sofa cushion covers
  • Banquette cushions and dining bench cushions
  • Any bespoke cushion design

What we offer for sofas:

  • Replacement sofa cushions with new foam inserts
  • Sofa cushion refilling and restuffing services
  • Custom sofa cushion covers in your choice of upholstery fabric

Do all cushions come with piping?

No, piping is a premium, optional extra that we do not include by default.

How long is the dispatch time usually?

Our dispatch time for custom cushions varies depending on demand, order complexity, and seasonal fluctuations:

(Includes standard bench cushions, window seat cushions, seat cushion pads)
  • Shaped or complex cushions: Approximately 4 weeks

  • Replacement sofa cushions

*All lead times are approximate and subject to current demand, seasonal variations, and order complexity.

Do you sell outdoor cushions? Are they fully waterproof?

Yes, we create custom outdoor cushions using water-resistant outdoor fabrics. However, it's important to understand that while some our outdoor upholstery fabrics are waterproof, once they've been sewn, small amounts of water can potentially enter through the needle holes in the seams.

What we offer for outdoor use:

  • Custom outdoor bench cushions
  • Garden bench cushions and seat pads
  • Outdoor window seat cushions (for conservatories and garden rooms)
  • Weather-resistant cushion covers
  • Replacement outdoor cushion covers

Care recommendations: For best results and longevity, we recommend bringing outdoor cushions inside during heavy rain or prolonged wet weather, or storing them in a covered area when not in use.

Outdoor foam options: We can provide water-resistant foam/Water resistant covering for outdoor cushions, though we recommend discussing your specific requirements with our upholstery experts to ensure you get the right foam density and fabric combination for your outdoor seating project.

You can see our outdoor fabric ranges here.
